    Disposition:

-Anger: Ravus' driving emotion is anger. His desire for revenge against King Regis leads him to join the Imperial Army, and he flies into a rage at an unconscious Noctis when his sister dies. He antagonizes the Emperor shortly before his death, denouncing his rule. Although his primary motivation is love for his sister, his vehicle for moving forward with his plans is anger at their fate.

-Devotion to Duty: Ravus considers his primary duty to protect Lunafreya. As both the Oracle of their star and his sister, Lunafreya is the most important person to Ravus, and he is willing to sacrifice anything to keep her safe. He joins the Imperial Army, his enemy, and rises in their ranks to gain the power and position that will allow him to enact his plan. The first effort he makes is to take the Ring of Lucii, which obviously fails. Then, he uses his rank as Imperial High Commander to keep Lunafreya from being captured, and even plans to kill one of the 6 Astrals so that Luna cannot form a life-draining covenant with her. When he is finally forced to confront the fact that he can no longer protect Lunafreya from her duty, he encourages her to keep going, and when Lunafreya dies, he resolves to support Noctis in her stead, in spite of his personal feelings about the prince.

-Pride: Ravus is stiff and formal, always trying to uphold the decorum of the line of the Oracle. He sacrifices his reputation by allowing the world to believe he has betrayed his sister and allied with the Empire, and it is apparent how heavily this weighs on him when he lashes out at Noctis for pointing out how he serves the emperor. For someone who so highly values loyalty and duty to be accused of disloyalty, forced to hold his tongue in his own defense to protect his sister, is a constant source of fury for him.

-(Lack of) Trust: At 16, Ravus feels that he was abandoned by King Regis and Lucis. From that point onward, he has given up looking on help from anyone other than himself. He tried to usurp Noctis' destiny by taking the Ring of the Lucii because he refuses to believe Noctis can succeed. Rather than working with the Lucians against the empire, Ravus plays his own long game and tries to singlehandedly save Lunafreya's life. In the game, he functions as a foil for Noctis, who has formed strong bonds with his brothers-in-arms, and Ravus' isolation dooms him to failure. It is only when he begins to trust- first in Lunafreya's convictions, then in Ignis' abilities, and finally in Noctis' destiny- that Ravus is able to move forward and grow.

Under pressure: Ravus is competent and self-reliant to a flaw, but he also struggles with his anger and tends to be over-dramatic. When he faces challenges, he tends to keep his plans very close to the chest. However, he's willing to engage with the power structures in place in his world and do what is necessary to ensure he has the resources he needs for his goals. In this world, if intimacy is what is required of him to remain independent and potentially be able to provide for his sister (if she shows up), he will do it. Ravus powered through 12 years of serving in the Imperial Army even though they murdered his mother; he's capable of doing whatever it takes to get himself ahead.

When he becomes overwhelmed with anger, he tends to lash out violently. It's completely possible that he will get into fights or get himself arrested if someone knows how to push him the right way. His triggers for rage are mostly related to his sister's death or King Regis, so when interacting with characters outside of his canon, it is less likely that they will have the right fuel to fan those particular flames.

    Condition upon arrival:
Ravus will be arriving shortly after losing his sister. Mentally, he is grieving, but is clinging to his promise to Lunafreya to keep himself going. He's technically allied with the Lucians now (though they may not be aware of that).
Physically, he is still injured from the various battles in Altissia (fighting his way through the city, getting sense beaten into him by Ignis, and being slammed into a stone pillar by Ardyn's magic). He was able to walk away, but is pretty beaten up and bruised.

    Abilities:
-Sword Fighting: Ravus uses both his saber and later King Regis's sword in battle. He is shown taking down magitek armor with his blade when he teams up with Ignis, and is a formidable boss when Ignis fights against him.

-Magitek Weaponry: He is only shown using the magitek in his prosthetic arm, but presumably as an Imperial Officer, Ravus has received training in its use.

-Last Rites (Technique): A powerful attack that uses electricity from his Magitek arm in a thunder attack.

-Imperial Command: Ravus is an officer in the army and is able to command both Magitek Infantry and the lower ranking officers in the army.

-Eos Lore: As a member of the Oracle's family and a former prince of Tenebrae, Ravus has been thoroughly educated in the legends, prophecies, and history of Eos.

Inventory: -Alba Leonis: Ravus' saber, bestowed to him by the Nifleheim Emperor when he became an Imperial Officer.

-Tenebraen Raiment: his clothing, the most extra coat you could hope for

-Magitek prosthetic arm: a replacement for his left arm after it was burned by the Kings of Lucii's rejection. Gave him enhanced strength and an elemental lightning attack

    Gembond: Amethyst
Gem Location: Left hand palm (integrated with his Magitek prosthetic)

World Description: Wiki Link (Eos)

History: Wiki Link (Ravus)

Death: Killed by Ardyn while disguised as Noctis. He is later revived as a daemon and killed again by the party, but I am going to use his death as a human as the entry point into the game.

What are your plans for this character in-game? Ravus in canon is a solitary character, serving as a foil for Noctis, who always has his team of friends to help him. Ravus gets killed off when he starts to work with the team, so my plan is to explore him actually being able to have allies and work toward a common goal. He's going to be pissed that after everything his family has done to try to save the light on Eos, he is stuck in an afterlife full of darkness. From the TDM, Ravus is thinking a way to go would be to see if it is possible to lure the world eaters away from civilization by using decoy groups to lure them away.

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? Coming from a world that is slowly losing its light, I am definitely interested in having Ravus engage with the mystery of the eternal night here. He considers it his duty to help save the world, even if this one isn't his.

How does your character generally get along with other people? Ravus is a loner in recovery. He spent his the past 12 years working alone to try to position himself in such a way that he would be able to save his sister, and only enters an alliance with Ignis as a last-ditch effort to save her. He begins to open up to working with the Lucians before his death. In most interactions, Ravus is kind of stiff and formal, but it's a learning process. He hates asking for help, but he's going to have to if he wants to survive here.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game?
Ravus has been living with the knowledge that his sister (and Noctis, but that's less important) would die for Eos, and he has been fighting it for his whole life with increasing desperation. When Lunafreya dies, he resolves to do what he can to aid Noctis in her stead, but he isn't super concerned with keeping himself alive in the process. He walks into the Imperial Capital with the knowledge that he probably won't walk back out. Upon waking up in Beacon, he's going to be frustrated and depressed that his sister is still struggling, even in the afterlife. Any promised reward for their toil was a lie. He won't let his feelings keep him from acting, though. He's got plenty of experience working through the pain.

Skills/Abilities:
-Sword Fighting: Ravus uses both his saber and later King Regis's sword in battle. He is shown taking down magitek armor with his blade when he teams up with Ignis.

Flaws/Weaknesses:
-Trust Issues: At 16, Ravus feels that he was abandoned by King Regis and Lucis.
-Anger: Ravus' driving emotion is anger. His desire for revenge against King Regis leads him to join the Imperial Army, and he flies into a rage at an unconscious Noctis when his sister dies. He antagonizes the Emperor shortly before his death. Although his primary motivation is love for his sister, his vehicle for moving forward with his plans is anger at their fate.
-Missing Arm: Ravus badly burns his left arm trying to wear the Ring of the Lucii. This results in his arm being amputated and replaced with a magitek prosthetic. This arm is severed by Ardyn as Ravus is killed. He will be coming in with it mostly missing.
-Lunafreya: Not a flaw, but Ravus' most important weakness. He would sacrifice anything to save his sister, and when faced with losing her, he was driven into a rage.

Personality: In spite of all his flaws, Ravus is a tragic character who really is trying to save his sister and find a way for her to be happy. He is motivated by his duty, first to his family, then to the rest of the world. He is the type of person who cares about results, not about the methods used to get there. He was willing to sacrifice his relationship with Lunafreya to ensure her safety and let his people think he was a traitor because it put him in a better position to protect his homeland.

Ravus' loyalty is hard won, but enduring, and his grudges have similar strength. Ravus doesn't believe in doing anything half-heartedly. He is overly dramatic, and has an extreme temper, but overall, he has a good heart and ends up dying in service to his world.

Items:
-Tenebraen Raiment (his default outfit with the Fleuret emblem; someone ripped and scorched from a magical blast)
-Magitek Prosthetic Arm, just the shoulder (left arm, chopped off by Ardyn)

History: Wiki Link

Personality:
Ravus was greatly shaped by the invasion of his home by the Niflheim Empire when he was 16. The devastating loss of his mother and his country’s freedom, and the perceived betrayal by King Regis left the young Ravus angry and terrified of losing his only remaining family, Lunafreya. He devotes twelve years to a plot that appears to stem purely from a desire for revenge.

To those around him, Ravus’s grudge against Regis seemed misplaced. General Glauca murdered his mother, yet Ravus placed the blame entirely on Regis. However, there are several reasons for Ravus to direct his rage toward the Lucian King alone, rather than at the responsible parties. First off, because Tenebrae falls under Imperial Rule, to oppose the Empire would mean placing himself, his sister, and his country in danger. It is seen later in the game what opposing the Empire costs, when Tenebrae is bombed and Fenestala Manor burned in retaliation for Ravus’ defection. Ravus, though shown to be reckless with his own life, is not stupid, and he plays a much longer game in terms of taking his revenge on Niflheim. He only openly defies the Emperor when he has nothing left to lose. Secondly, although Regis does not strike the killing blow on Queen Sylva, he violates the alliance between them by abandoning the Fleurets and Tenebrae. For Ravus, who values duty above all else, this sin is unforgivable. Regis was willing to accept Tenebraen hospitality and healing for his son, but abandoned them in their time of need to retreat to his walled city. In Ravus’s mind, this means he failed in his duty as king and is therefore unworthy of Ravus’ allegiance. He cannot reconcile this act of cowardice with a bloodline that is meant to act as their world's savior, and this loss of faith in the Lucis Caelums is what drives Ravus to try to seize the royal power himself and to discourage Lunafreya from supporting Noctis.

Ravus considers his primary duty to protect Lunafreya. In order for his plans to succeed, the Empire has to think him completely loyal and driven by his hatred of Lucis, which meant convincing even his beloved sister that his desire for power outweighs all else. Their relationship suffers, and they are not able to reconcile their differences until Lunafreya is dying. Though he loves her more than anyone else in his life, Ravus judges the price of his sister’s affection worth paying in vain hope of shielding her from harm. When he loses her, he falls into despair, asking “What hope is there in a future my sister will never see?”

This is not to say that Ravus’s driving emotion is not anger. It absolutely is. Ravus legitimately hates Regis and wants to see him dead for the king’s perceived sins against him. He is only able to accept Noctis as king after Noctis proves himself by winning the approval of three Astrals, justifying the faith he has seen Lunafreya and Ignis place in Noctis. When Lunafreya is killed, Ravus flies into a rage and tries to kill Noctis, which is counterproductive to Luna’s sacrifice to say the least. It is only Ignis’ intervention that keeps him from ending the line of Lucii for good. His temper is seen in smaller ways in earlier cut scenes as well; when Ardyn intervenes in Duscae and later in Altissia, Ravus is helpless to act against him, so he physically turns away from the Chancellor in disgust rather than have to look at him. Finally, shortly before he is killed, Ravus antagonizes the Emperor by proclaiming his allegiance to Noctis, knowing that he will be punished for doing so. Since he has nothing left to lose, he can finally speak his mind about how much he hates the Emperor. Ravus uses his anger for strength, and is absolutely brutal to face in battle because of it.

A foil for Noctis, Ravus readily accepts his duty constantly acts on his own. Because he feels that the line of the Lucians is unworthy, he hopes that the line of the Oracle can serve as a substitute for the savior of the world. The attempt to take up fill Noctis’ role by wearing the Ring of the Lucii is an act of arrogance, and also of desperation. As Blood of the Oracle, Ravus has been raised to know the cost of an alliance with the gods, and is willing to risk it because he believes Noctis is unfit and unwilling to do his job. (His lack of faith in Noctis similarly leads him to push Lunafreya to abandon her prophesied role, not wanting her to sacrifice her life to no purpose.) Partially out of necessity, and partially from his own hubris, Ravus thinks he alone can defy the empire, protect Lunafreya, and avenge his mother. His plans depend on secrecy, but he also does not make attempts to befriend others or let his sister know what he is plotting (even though he has no reason to believe Lunafreya would betray him). Having lost so much and seen a trusted ally turn tail when he was 16, Ravus has issues trusting anyone, and so isolates himself. Teaming up with Ignis in the DLC was a major turning point for Ravus because he finally had to accept he could not reach Lunafreya in time on his own. At his current canon point, he is only just starting to place his faith in Noctis as the Chosen King of Eos.

Ravus is not without positive qualities. He is highly competent, as showcased by the fact that he has risen to the rank of High Commander despite being a foreigner. He is a powerful warrior, and survives in spite of the other Imperial Officers vying for his spot. Once Ravus’ loyalty is won, it does not waver. When he finally pledges to help Noctis, he does so to his dying breath, and in the alternate ending, he helps the party infiltrate Niflheim and spends the 10 year time skip helping the survivors of the scourge until he can fulfill his duty by returning the Sword of the Father to the rightful king. Ravus’ caring side is shown in his interactions with Lunafreya. His main problem with Noctis is that he does not think him a worthy recipient of Lunafreya’s affections or her sacrifice, but when Luna convinces him that she will not be swayed, he supports her in his own way. Though he is not good at conveying his (non-anger) emotions, he is able to encourage her not to give up by acknowledging her duty as Oracle and reminding her of her own strength of will. Ravus does not coddle, nor does he turn away from a task that must be done, even though the more compassionate option would have been to deliver the Ring to Noctis in his sister’s place. Understanding the pride of his bloodline, he knows that once Lunafreya resolves to support Noctis, ‘failing’ by passing her burden to her brother would be more painful to her than pressing on and dying for her cause.

There is a sense of drama in all of Ravus’s appearances. In a world that blends modern and archaic, he maintains the flowery speech pattern of the Tenebraens, and he shuns the magitek armor units that his fellow officers rely on, preferring to use his sword and magitek arm in battle. He will turn and physically walk away from a conversation he does not wish to have, and kicks down doors when he could just as easily open them. Ravus aims for a powerful and untouchable reputation, which serves to isolate him from his peers. In spite of his alliance with the Empire, which most Lucians interpret as betrayal to his family and country, he cannot stand for anyone to imply that he serves them. He sacrifices his reputation for the sake of his plans, but it obviously wounds his pride (and stokes his temper) that people perceive him as disloyal.

TL;DR Version: Ravus is the proud son of an ancient lineage who seeks to oppose the prophesied events of the game in order to protect his sister from those incompetent Lucians and the daemon-loving Imperials. He is too angry for his own good, but tries to put his anger to good use; however, because this is Final Fantasy XV, he tries so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn’t even matter.

The Reunion

Nov. 7th, 2017 11:59 pm
sonoftenebrae: (resting bitch face)
Set after Gladio's return on 10/14
Location: Yun'Ashia

Ravus drums his fingers nervously on the bathroom counter. He dragged Gladiolus through a shower, both to get the grime off of him, and also to check over this new, older body of his. Gladio is clean and mostly unscathed (Ravus plans to trace all the new scars and learn their shape and provenance later)...and now there is nothing else to delay them from seeking out Ignis and figuring out how the pieces of their puzzling relationship will end up coming together.

He hopes it ends with them coming together.

"We should...we need to speak with Ignis. Not here. Somewhere private." He pauses, and when he looks up at Gladio, his expression softens. "If you're feeling up to it. We can rest if you need."

Gladio has been through so much. Ten years, in a world of waning light and waning hope. Ravus is impatient, anxious to bring the three of them together, but he won't push.

College AU

[Most students out on the quad sit on the lush grass or spread out towels or blankets to lay on. Ravus has appropriated a chair from one of the academic rooms and set up a tv tray table as a makeshift desk under a tree at one end of the green. He has a stack of papers spread before them, which he descends upon with a red pen.

He wouldn't be out here at all, this close to exam-grading deadline, but Lunafreya had come to his tiny dorm room and stubbornly demanded he leave before he turned into some sort of cave-dwelling goblin. It was not his fault he was in a basement room, that was where he'd been able to secure a single in the grad complex.

Out on the quad, students jog, walk, lounge, strum at guitars, toss frisbees back and forth, and do all sorts of other activities that are infuriatingly distracting. Ravus scowls to himself. The ones in his class might not be so carefree if they could see him grading these abysmal midterms of theirs.

Ravus pauses his work to rub at his temples, then gather up his hair into a messy tail to get it out of his face. It is so much easier to concentrate when he's shut away. The gorgeous weather, the sounds of others enjoying their Friday afternoon, they just serve to make Ravus more dour. He still has two classes' worth of exams to get through.]
